Nadeau seeks to answer the question posed in the title by examining the hypotheses of two contemporary, opposing cultures-the scientists-engineers who argue that consciousness and AI (artificial intelligence) computer systems will evolve into entities as complex as humans and then transcend humanity and the humanist-social scientists who argue that human life and consciousness are an "ultimate" value that can only be poorly approximated by computers.
